About Elisa

“In my dreams, I’ve always been a poet.”

What role does poetry play in your life?

Poetry provides me with a center. Poetry to me is like the center of the pinwheel. The pinwheel spins, but the center is always that, the center. Poetry is my center.

Can you mention some of your favorite books or authors?

My favorite book is Let the Great World Spin, by Colum McCann. It’s a grand, sweeping book. I recall reading it when I felt that my world was spinning just a bit too fast. Somehow, rather than slow down my world – which is what I was originally hoping reading it would do – it did me one better. It allowed me to welcome the spin.

Do you have any personal poetry moments you’d like to share?

There’s a song that to me is more like a poem. It’s from a group called Little Big Town. The song is called The Daughters. The line that is most meaningful is:

“Dream for everyone but not yourself.”

I think that’s the line that gave me permission to say that I want to be a successful poet. That is my dream. And I’m still working on defining it, but I have big dreams.
